Babb's Update: Veterans Day Weekend

       What is the plan?

  • Restore building to roller skating rink and multifunction usage.
  • Sublease the building to an event planner/rink operator.
  • Any profits realized from the sublease will be utilized for CRC’s mission of the protection and preservation of the Congamond Lakes.

Last weekend we continued working on the ceremonial main entryway. We can continue working on the ceremonial main entryway this weekend. Then we will move onto the northwest corner to begin framing it in. This weekend we look forward to having another contractor to work with us.

Our building committee has been hard at work meeting with our roofing contractor. We hope to have work begin within the next 2-3 weeks, to install the new lower shed standing seam roof.

Prior to the new roof installation we will also be installing the new gutters and soffit on the upper roof, having the upper exterior wall prepped, primed, and painted. The 13 pane windows will have new window sills and they will all be reglazed primed and painted.

Following the Town of Suffield’s bidding process, the winning bidder of March '08 (Eagle Rivit) was given first option to hold their bid. They Did! We have met 3 times to date and hope to have a contract / permit in hand between the Eagle Rivit Co. of West Hartford, CT. and the Town of Suffield very soon.

Why Volunteer? Your volunteer time will bring this project closer to opening.

Think ahead to the day you'll be able to have your Birthday Parties, Fencing Competitions, Ball Room Dancing, Anniversary Party's and other Family Fun once again at Babb's Roller Rink and Amusement Park. You'll have fun just like everyone did at our Independence Day Event '09 Cruise Congamond.

To Do: These are some lengthy projects, so we will continue to work on them as follows:
Install some bracing under the platform/stage. We still need to lower the dirt /sand level under the stage around the piers, this will prevent further damage to the stage. There are many timbers that need to be replaced under the stage / platform. These need to be supported and releveled. There is more to handle than we have the ability to correct.

We have contacted 2 rigging companies, Able Rigging and Hallamore Rigging. Neither were interested in this project. Next we contacted 2 local companies that build, restore, old barns, timber framing, post and beam, much as we have here. In the many weeks now we have only had 1 responce. The approximate costs are being negociated. We (the building committee) will try for another comparison bid to replace the timbers and level the stage.

Frame in the northwest corner valley rafter and supporting walls. Continue installing the Lower Ledger board in the new party room #2. In the old snack bar area we have part of the floor and old interior foundation wall to jack hammer out yet and remove.

Tools to Bring: Chain saws, Brush Hogs, Land scaping rakes, shovels. Lopping or pruning sheers, brush saws, shovels. Skill saw, drills or what ever you have! Bring a Smile and share your memories!

Open to Visitors: The Rink is open to visitors during Work Party's....... Come cheer us on and spread the word ... we're still here and the light at the end of the tunnel is still illuminated.

Request for Eagle Scout: Does anyone know of an Eagle Scout that might be interested in updating the old seats as a project? Please contact: Scott@BabbsRink.org
